Last night the 75th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony was held at Rockefeller Center Rink. The ceremony has changed drastically over the years. I remember when the event was skating centered, with Olympians and up and comers performing on the ice. I also remember that the event was only televised in the local NYC TV station and not nationally by NBC. The format has changed in the last several years (to suit the national TV audience?) so now the 2 hour event is mostly filled with celebrity singers belting out holiday tunes and a lot of it is pre-taped. New this year - the tree is all about energy conservation. I still watch the final countdown every year but wish they would tie the tree lighting with some aspect of skating again.
