When people rave about Sasha Cohen, Nicole Bobek, Lucinda Ruh or Michelle Kwan's spirals and overall artistry and flexibility, I often think back to Katherine Healy, whom I consider to be the skater with the best and most superb extension and body line.
Katherine, now age 38, was a skating prodigy who studied with 1976 Olympic gold medalist John Curry and was a skater in his company when she was very young. Some remember her as the subject of a book A Very Young Skater, published in 1979. Katherine was also a ballet prodigy and ultimately chose to pursue ballet full time, achieving immense success as a prima ballerina. She then attended Princeton University, graduating with a degree in art history. After college, Katherine went back to being a prima ballerina for a European dance company for a number of years, and then returned to professional skating in the late 1990's. After her return to skating, she fell in love and married her coach Peter Burrows. Now she's involved in teaching skating as well as dance in New York. Whew - that sounds like a couple of lifetimes for one person!
This beautiful program to Tristan and Isolde by Wagner begins at minute 4. The first 4 minutes comprise an interview with Katherine on her ballet life and then to her skating life.
