This morning at Rockefeller Skating Rink, about 100 lucky girls got a chance to skate at the world's most famous rink and celebrate Mia, the 2008 American Girl Place Doll of the Year. The event was hosted by three-time U.S. pairs champion (1970-1972), two-time Olympian and World bronze medalist JoJo Starbuck, who also teaches a workshop at the rink. As part of the celebration, JoJo introduced four up-and-coming skaters, one of whom was 10-year-old Viktoria Petrenko, whose father is Viktor Petrenko, the 1992 Olympic gold medalist in men's singles. Viktor was extremely gracious to his fans, taking photographs upon request, while keeping the focus on the real skating stars of the morning.
Below is the first skater that JoJo introduced to the guests, and she is like Mia in many ways -- a hockey player who also loves to figure skate. By the way, it was immediately apparent to me that JoJo choreographed the skating numbers because they all had her signature style and elegance.
After the skate, the guests headed back to the American Girl Place two blocks away for more fun activities, including a question & answer session with JoJo, and to learn more about Mia. There are two more skate dates celebrating Mia on January 24 and February 3 and reservations are required. If you're in the area, it's even worth it to see the show as a spectator from above.
