Here's an update on my previous story about the "Women Fore Women" golf tournament that was held at The Golf Club at Oxford Greens this past Monday. Dorothy Hamill served as the honorary chairperson for this event to raise money for the mammography fund at Saint Mary's Hospital.
The fundraiser was a tremendous success, raising $50,000(!), with the funds going directly to the mammography fund. The $50,000 will provide free mammograms for hundreds of women without health insurance. Having mammograms is critical for early detection of breast cancer,
which leads to early treatment and increased survival rates.
Mammography is the best screening tool available for the majority of
women, but they are expensive if you don't have health insurance, upwards of hundreds of dollars for one mammogram. This fundraiser made the cost a nonissue for hundreds of women who would otherwise be unable to afford this potentially life-saving screening.
Lezlye Zupkus, Director of Development at the Saint Mary's Hospital Foundation, advised that over 150 women signed up for the morning and afternoon rounds of 18 holes. Each golfer had the opportunity to meet Dorothy, get autographs, play golf and have lunch. And each woman also knew that she is helping to give a free mammogram screening to another woman, and that must be a great feeling to have. That's what struck me about the event -- so many times, we donate to this cause or to that cause and hope that the money makes it to the right people. The "Women Fore Women" tournament placed no doubt on where the money was going, how it was going to be used, and who it was going to help. A woman without health insurance will get a free mammogram. Simple. Period. Can't all fundraisers be this effective?
