Three-time World champions and two-time Olympians Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo (see above) took part in the Beijing Olympic torch delay in Harbin, China on Friday. Both hail from Harbin and are heroes in the area.
The two first began their partnership in 1992 when the Chinese skating program was in its infancy. They soon set a new standard for technical and then artistic excellence, culminating in the 2007 World title. After the free skate, Zhao proposed to Shen and on May 28, 2007, the couple married in China. They took the 2007-2008 season off to tour with Stars on Ice. In July 2007, they opened a training facility in Shenzhen, China to develop the next generation of Chinese figure skaters. Whether they will compete in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics is still unknown, but I for one, would love to see them compete against the current crop of pairs teams, including their countrymen, Zhang Dan/Zhang Hao and Pang Qing/Tong Jian.
In the photo above, Shen and Zhao light the cauldron, but not before demonstrating how the Summer Games could use a touch of figure skating pizzazz. See below:
