Angela Maxwell (see right), the 2007 novice champion and 2008 junior silver medalist, is now calling New York and New Jersey "home." I caught up with Angela at the Ice House in Hackensack, New Jersey, where she was helping out at the Adult Summer Camp. The 16-year-old recently relocated from Dallas to New York to train under Robin Wagner (Sarah Hughes' former coach). Previously coached by Russian pairs great Natalia Mishkutenok, Angela explained that she needed training facilities that were "beyond excellent" and when Robin asked her to move to the east coast, she obliged. We also chatted about transitioning to the east coast, attending school online, competitions for the upcoming season and teaching adults at the camp.
Angela's long program this year is to a Japanese anime called InuYasha and her short program is to Waltz Masquerade. I also found out that she is half Japanese on her mother's side. She said her mother is Japanese and father is European, so her taste in everything, from music to fashion, is eclectic. That afternoon, she described her outfit, which included a furry white scarf and black lace gloves, as "straight from Japan." A self-described "I'm not into brand names" girl, I definitely got a sense of independence and determination from this rising star in the skating world.
