Last Friday, the Today show kicked off it's Today at the Rink series with Olympian and U.S. medalist Emily Hughes. Emily (younger sister to 2002 Olympic champion Sarah Hughes) is currently a sophomore at Harvard University and plans on competing this season at the senior level. Her first major international competition is the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series and she has been assigned to the Trophée Eric Bompard Cachemire in Paris, France (November 13 - November 16). For the Today show, Emily skated to Celine Dion's Taking Chances and the crowd that gathered went absolutely wild for her. She graciously stayed afterwards to take photos, chat with fans and to speak with me about her upcoming season and balancing school and skating.
Emily was also on hand to talk about Skating for Life (see right), which will air tonight on NBC, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. EST. The event will raise money and awareness for breast cancer research, and this cause is near and dear to Emily's heart, as her mother Amy is a breast cancer survivor. Other notable skaters joining Emily include Sasha Cohen, Jeffrey Buttle, Rudy Galindo, Steven Cousins, Jennifer Robinson and Silvia Fontana. Mega country star Sara Evans will be providing the music while they skate. It's a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon and support a wonderful event.
