Evgeny Platov, ice dancing extraordinnaire, lives and coaches in New Jersey? Boy, I'd better start keeping a running list of world-renowned Russian coaches and choreographers who are literally one hour away from me. First, there was Nikolai Morozov at the Ice House in Hackensack, New Jersey, whom I had a chance to speak with over the summer. Now there's Evgeny Platov at the Princeton Sports Center in Princeton, New Jersey. Evgeny's list of accomplishments include winning the 1994 and 1998 Olympic gold medal in ice dancing with partner Oksana "Pasha" Grishuk (who's been dealing with off-ice issues of her own). After their partnership dissolved in 1998, Evgeny toured extensively with Maya Usova, after she left her ice dancing partner and spouse Alexander Zhulin. Click here if you've got a few minutes to spare about Pasha and Alexander's love affair gone awry.
I've wanted to interview Evgeny for the longest time and so, it was such a treat to chat with him a few weeks ago at Rockefeller Rink in New York City. Evgeny brought two of his ice dancing teams to perform exhibitions at the rink: The brother and sister senior team from Great Britain Sinead and John Kerr, and the (also) brother and sister team of Danielle and Alexander Gamelin, who are the 2008 U.S. Intermediate champions. They were all there courtesy of Ice Theatre of New York, an organization that promotes ice skating as a theatrical artform, and by the way, are also available for corporate parties, events, commercials, you name it. So on that evening, a company decided to hold their holiday party at the rink and Ice Theatre and the Kerrs, Gamelins and other performers, entertained the crowd with performances and afterwards provided the attendees with skating instruction.
I can't think of the right words to describe Evgeny's personality, so you'll just have to watch the video to see for yourself. He's very funny, very personable and verrry honest about his experience coaching top world teams. He's next headed to England with Sinead and John as they go for their sixth national title, and then a quick turnaround with them to the European Championships. I also had a chance to speak with Sinead and John about their medaling at Skate America and Trophee Eric Bompard as well as a whole host of other topics, so stayed tuned for that story coming to you next week!
