The original dance just concluded at the 2009 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. Teams skated to music from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, and after several "hi-de-hos" from Cab Calloway, Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir maintained their lead with a lively charleston number. They received 60.90 points for their original dance and are in the lead overall with 97.30 points. The United States' Meryl Davis and Charlie White are close behind -- they received 60.42 points for their charleston number and are sitting in second place with a total of 95.65 points.
And you know, I don't know if it's that Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates from the U.S. skated last so therefore, I'm remembering their number the most, but I absolutely love their original dance. Maybe it's also that I love the choice of music -- Let Yourself Go from Follow the Fleet (soundtrack) by Irving Berlin. Or perhaps the costumes -- she with her sparkly red dress and he with a sailor suit. It's kind of...relaxing to watch them perform their swing number. They received 59.48 points for their original dance, which pulled them up to third place with 90.89 points overall. (Yesterday, they were in fourth place after the compulsory dance.)
The ice dance competition concludes tomorrow with the free dance.
