Fresh off his World championship victory in Los Angeles, Evan Lysacek (see below) was in New York City a week later on April 6 to support Figure Skating in Harlem. Figure Skating in Harlem held it's fifth annual Skating with the Stars benefit gala at Wollman Rink in Central Park and it was truly a who's who of the skating world. We're talking Dorothy Hamill, Evan of course, Johnny Weir, Tanith Belbin, Ben Agosto, Kimmie Meissner, Sarah Hughes, Alissa Czisny, Timothy Goebel, Todd Eldredge, Tai Babilonia, Rachael Flatt, Jeremy Abbott, JoJo Starbuck, Melissa Gregory, Denis Petukov and hockey hall of famer Rod Gilbert -- an unbelievable array of past and present greats who came together for this event. I was in interview heaven with one thing always in the back of my mind -- "I am not leaving without talking to Evan."
And so, here's my one-on-one with Mr. World Champion. We talked about his well-deserved win at Worlds, his support of Figure Skating in Harlem, the Johnny-Evan rivalry (where he made an interesting observation that one of the effects may have been to motivate others to get better), the state of men's figure skating in the U.S., Olympic dreams and even his acting pursuits. I also spoke to Johnny at the event and that interview will be coming up on Monday!
