What an embarrassment of riches! Last night, I attended Figure Skating in Harlem's Skating with the Stars benefit. Figure Skating in Harlem is a girls development program that combines ice skating with academic studies. This is their annual fundraiser at Wollman Rink in Central Park and skating and nonskating celebrities came out in full force to support the program.
This is where the embarrassment of riches comes in for me -- Dorothy Hamill, Evan Lysacek, Johnny Weir, Jeremy Abbott, Alissa Czisny, Rachael Flatt, Todd Eldredge, Tanith Belbin, Ben Agosto, Timothy Goebel, Melissa Gregory, Denis Petukov, Sarah Hughes, Kimmie Meissner, JoJo Starbuck and Tai Babilonia (the honoree this year, along with First Lady of New York Michelle Paterson) were all on hand to skate with the attendees and I had the chance to interview them individually on camera. What a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me. I kept asking myself, "Am I really asking Dorothy Hamill what she's up to?" I confessed to her that out of all the skaters out there, I was most nervous to talk to her as she transcended skating for me. She laughed, and confessed to me that she knew how I felt because she was the same way the time that she met her icon, Julie Andrews!
Who did I miss interviewing because I was running around like a lunatic trying to catch everyone? Alissa, Kimmie, JoJo, Sarah and Timothy -- darn it! Next time for sure. Today I'll be busy looking through the video and the hundreds of photos that we shot to share with you all. In the meantime, here's two of my fav moments -- Alissa, Jeremy and Rachael (see above) in "civilian clothes" on the red carpet. And of course Johnny (see right) in a one-of-a-kind Johnny ensemble.
