NEW YORK, NY – The Johnny Weir feature film documentary POP STAR ON ICE will have its New York premiere at NewFest on Thursday, June 11, the festival’s closing night. The film will screen at the SVA Theater 1 at 8:00 p.m. and tickets can be purchased through the festival’s website (www.newfest.org). The film will screen on the festival circuit throughout the summer before airing on Sundance Channel in the fall to coincide with the ISU Grand Prix Series of Figure Skating.
POP STAR ON ICE will have its world premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival on May 24.
POP STAR ON ICE is an unprecedented behind-the-scenes portrait of Olympian and three-time US National Figure Skating Champion Johnny Weir. The film tracks the ups and downs of Weir’s career from his late start in the sport at age 12 to his meteoric rise to winning the Junior World Championship four years later, his three National Championship victories, the aftermath of his 2006 Olympic experience and his coaching change.
“I am excited for the documentary release because it gives people the opportunity to see what my life is like outside of the glitz and glamour and shows them what my life is really like behind the scenes,” Weir stated. “I’m so happy to open myself and my world to fans of figure skating and people who are just getting to know me for the first time. I want people to laugh and cry when they watch the movie. I hope I can help to show the world what it takes to be a world-class figure skater and give them a three dimensional idea of what the life of a figure skater is like.”
Weir recently joined the Board of Governors of nPlay, a non-profit organization that is uniting athletes from across the sports world devoted to fighting childhood obesity and a healthy lifestyle for young Americans. Weir also recently announced a self-designed fashion line called “Be Unique” that will be launched in Korea in the upcoming weeks. His next scheduled competition will be at the 2009 Grand Prix Series in the fall.
