Here are the results of the 2009 Finlandia Trophy, which concluded yesterday in Vantaa, Finland. Held annually since 1995, this is the last senior-level international competition before the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series begins this week. I was particularly interested in how Japan's Daisuke Takahashi would fare in his first major competition this season. A three-time Japanese national champion, the 2007 World silver medalist, and a 2006 Olympian, he missed all of last season due to knee injury and we were eagerly awaiting his return. (As an aside, Daisuke's 2007-2008 short program, a hip hop version of Swan Lake, was the best SP of the year in my opinion.)
No problem getting back into competitive mode, as Daisuke took the gold with 224.25 points. Sergei Voronov from Russia won the silver, and Stephen Carriere from the U.S. won the bronze. For the ladies, Alena Leonova from Russia came in first, followed by Laura Lepisto from Finland and Kiira Korpi also from Finland. In ice dance, Sinead and John Kerr from Great Britain won the gold, Anastasia Platonova and Alexander Grachev from Russia won the silver, and Alla Beknazarova and Vladimir Zuyev from the Ukraine won the bronze. There was no pairs event at the Finlandia Trophy.
