On Saturday, December 19, World and five-time U.S. pairs champion Tai Babilonia will be skating with hundreds of military families at The Rrrink in Medford, Oregon. Medford is 83 miles from Kingsley Field, home to the Air Force National
Guards and 173th Fighter Wing, whose mission is to "Train the Best
Air-to-Air Combat Pilots, and Serve Our State and Nation in Times of
Peace and War."
Tai moved to Oregon over a year ago from Los Angeles to start, as she calls it, "the second phase of my life." Recently she's been on an activist streak, baring (almost) all for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) while also celebrating a year and two months of sobriety. When she was in New York City last month to do a PETA event, she told me about the Tai Skates with the Troops event and said that, "For a long time I've wanted to do something to give back to the troops, but not necessarily do another skating show. I wanted to include everyone and really make the event about them. It's really me skating with them and everyone participating and having a great time." Tai also wanted to keep holding these free skating sessions for the military families all over the U.S. and said, "The first event will be in Medford, and it will be the first of many. My dream is to take the Tai Skates with the Troops event to all the military bases all over the country. This is my own personal way of giving back to all the women and men who protect us every single day. I will keep doing it till everyone is home safely."
