Be Good Johnny Weir Recap of Episode 3: Johnny goes on book tour and meets Michelle Anne Babineau
Be Good Johnny Weir airs Mondays 10/9 central on Logo. The show follows two time Olympian and three time US national figure skating champion Johnny Weir as he tries to find a career outside of skating.
Johnny's autobiography Welcome To My World is now out (it's about January 2011 now) and Johnny embarks on a 10 state/15 city in 6 days bus tour to promote his book and meet his fans. He's disappointed in Framingham, Massachusetts where few people show up at the Barnes & Noble but he's excited in Providence, Rhode Island, NYC and other cities where the stores are packed. The media blitz then continues with appearances on the Today show, Joy Behar show, Gayle King show, Talk Stoop and plenty of print press as well. (I attended the NYC book signing, click here to see pics.)
At the last book tour stop in Lancaster, PA, Johnny has a one-on-one meet and greet with Michelle Anne Babineau. Michelle is a vivacious 11-year-old Johnny fan who has been battling a brain tumor -- she was asked if she wanted to go to Disneyland or meet Johnny Weir. She chose the latter. Johnny is extremely anxious about meeting her because he does not know how to act around a sick child. He doesn't have to worry. Michelle is the one who puts Johnny at ease. She is charming, funny and makes Johnny feel comfortable -- he starts to relax and the two together was the best moment in Episode 3. He presents her with souvenirs from the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics which she accepts with excitement, including the scarf he wore for the opening ceremonies. There is a postscript that Michelle passed away in 2011.
While on tour, Johnny wonders if America is done with him and will be reflected in poor book sales. Tara is optimistic and and says that that is why he is taking risks this year in order to cross over into entertainment. Or if that fails, he can always coach. Johnny says he does not want to spend the rest of his life in an ice rink which he describes as hell.
The episode ends with a book party in NYC where luminaries such as Isaac Mizrahi, famous drag queens and beautiful people attend. Johnny is in hog's heaven.
In the last scene of Episode 3, Johnny sleeps over in Tara's NYC apartment after the book party (he lives in NJ) and she is busy cooking breakfast for him, which looks to be one egg and ten blueberries. She has good news and bad news. The bad news -- Welcome To My World did not make the bestseller list. Johnny wails "Why didn't nobody buy the book!?!" Tara says this will take time -- after all, he didn't make it to the Olympics the first year he started skating did he? He accepts this convoluted logic and says that although it stings a little bit he'll get over it. Now for the good news! Tara has set up a blind date for Johnny and she thinks this person is "adorable"..Johnny is terrified. The blind date next on Episode 4 of Be Good Johnny Weir.
