2014 PRUDENTIAL U.S. FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS BEGIN SUNDAY IN BOSTON
(1/4/14) - The 2014 Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships will be held Jan. 5-12, in Boston. All senior events and all junior free skates will be held at TD Garden, while juvenile, intermediate, novice and junior short program competition will be held at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (BCEC). Practices will also take place at The Skating Club of Boston.
More than 370 figure skaters will compete at the juvenile, intermediate, novice, junior and senior levels for 20 U.S. titles in ladies, men's, pairs and ice dance.
This year, the U.S. Championships serve as the final qualifying competition before U.S. Figure Skating nominates the 2014 U.S. Olympic Figure Skating Team. The organization plans to announce nominations to the Olympic Team on Sunday, Jan. 12. Team USA will send three ladies, two men, two pairs teams and three ice dance teams to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Feb. 6-23, in Sochi, Russia.
Official practice in Boston begins today. Competition starts from the BCEC at 9:15 a.m. (EST) on Sunday, Jan. 5, with the novice pattern dance. Senior-level competition begins Thursday, Jan. 9, with the pairs and ladies short programs.
NBC will provide eight hours of live, high-definition coverage of senior-level events, including three hours in primetime. In total, NBC will air 10 hours of skating, including the two-hour Smucker's Skating Spectacular, airing from 4-6 p.m. (EST) on Saturday, Jan. 18.
Icenetwork will provide live and on-demand coverage to Season Pass subscribers. The icenetwork team, led by Mike Mancuso (play-by-play), features former Olympic, World and U.S. medalists. Returning to the broadcast booth are Tanith Belbin, a five-time U.S. ice dancing champion and two-time Olympian with Ben Agosto; Sarah Hughes, the 2002 Olympic champion; Tonia Kwiatkowski, a three-time U.S. medalist; and two-time World bronze medalist Michael Weiss.
In addition to subscription video, icenetwork will offer extensive free coverage of the U.S. Championships, including video, live results, event recaps, blogs and photo galleries. Free video content will include interviews, features, press conferences and live technical analysis. Belbin, Hughes, Kwiatkowski and Weiss will host "AT&T Ice Desk Live" throughout the senior events, offering their insight and analysis on the competition. In addition, Belbin, Hughes and YouTube personality Michael Buckley will conduct behind-the-scenes interviews. Icenetwork will provide a unique second-screen experience for fans throughout NBC's live coverage of the Championships Saturday and Sunday.
