FROM US FIGURE SKATING:
CASTELLI AND SHNAPIR NINTH, ZHANG AND BARTHOLOMAY 14TH AFTER PAIRS SHORT PROGRAM
(2/11/14) - After the Team Event concluded on Sunday, the individual events began on Tuesday and the pairs short program kicked things off from Sochi, Russia, at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. After the short program, Marissa Castelli and Simon Shnapir are in ninth place and Felicia Zhang and Nathan Bartholomay are in 14th place.
Skating to music from Carlos Santana, Castelli and Shnapir earned a season-best score of 67.44 points. Earning 29.57 points for their components, Castelli and Shnapir earned positive grades of execution on each of their seven elements for a total technical element score of 37.87. The Boston-based duo opened with a huge triple twist which set themselves up nicely for solid side-by-side triple Salchows. Their best element, according to the judges, was a big throw triple Salchow which earned a GOE of 1.50.
Making their Olympic debut, Zhang and Bartholomay also earned a season-best score as they earned 56.90 points. Skating to "Carousel Waltz", Zhang and Bartholomay earned 24.83 points for their components and 32.07 points for their elements. The Florida-based duo received their best marks on their reverse lasso lift, which earned 6.80 points and their death spiral which grossed a GOE of .70 points.
In front of their home crowd, Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov delivered a world record short program score of 84.17 to lead the event into the free skate. In second place are Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy of Germany (79.64) and in third are Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov of Russia (75.21).
The event will conclude on Wednesday at 10:45 a.m. as the top 16 teams from the short program will perform in the free skate.
