2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships: Patrick Chan wins men's event

Patrick Chan is now a three-time Canadian Nationals champion. He soundly won the senior men's event at the 2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships with a total of 268.02 points (although there was a lot of buzz after his short that the judges were waaaayyy to generous with his scores). Winning the silver medal is Vaughn Chipeur with 222.10 points and coming in with the bronze is Kevin Reynolds with 216.49 points. After the event, Skate Canada announced that Patrick and Vaughn have been named to the Canadian Olympic Team for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships: Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir win ice dance event

The 2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships continues with the conclusion of the free dance tonight. It's a repeat of last year's gold, silver and bronze medalists. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir came in first with 221.95 points overall, followed by Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier with 184.70 points, and Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje with 184.40 points. Canada can send two ice dance teams to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Tessa and Scott are the first. Who will be the second team? [UPDATE: The second ice dance team going to the Olympics will be Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier.]

The final event will be the senior men's free skate tomorrow where Patrick Chan will hope to become three-time Canadian nationals champion. He is leading the pack after the short program with 90.14 points, followed by Vaughn Chipeur with 78.87 points, and Joey Russell with 74.04 points. And in the category of I Gotta Be Honest, who said this? "Patrick Chan scored 90 points in the short program, with a double, triple [combination] and a hand down on a flip? That's ridiculous. 2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships: Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison win pairs event

The senior pairs champions were crowned today at the 2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships in London, Ontario. Jessica Dubé and Bryce Davison won the event with a total of 198.27 points. They are now three-time Canadian national champions, also having won in 2007 and 2009. Anabelle Langlois and Cody Hay won the silver with 183.42 points, and Meagan Duhamel and Craig Buntin won the bronze with 172.18 points. The gold and silver medalist teams are headed to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

The 2010 Canadian Nationals conclude tomorrow with the men's free skate. For the men, Patrick Chan has over an 11 point lead over his closest rival Vaughn Chipeur. Joey Russell sits in third after the short program.

The ice dancing event is happening right now with the last group taking to the ice for the free dance. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje, Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier, and Allie Hann-McCurdy and Michael Coreno have yet to skate. 2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships: Joannie Rochette wins ladies event

Joannie Rochette won her sixth straight Canadian Nationals title at the 2010 BMO Canadian Figure Skating Championships in London, Ontario. She was trailing Cynthia Phaneuf after the short but came back super strong with the free skate to win the event with over a 25 point margin. Cynthia Phaneuf won the silver, and Myriane Samson won the bronze. Joannie and Cynthia are now headed to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Mira Leung, the three-time silver medalist, withdrew after the short program and said that she was "looking forward to 2014." After parting with long-time coach Joanne McLeod in 2009, Mira has been struggling to regain her form that put her on top in previous competitions. An article in the Edmonton Journal states that:

She described her parting with McLeod as a "fiasco" and said it put her training "off balance." She said Friday she is now trying to reinvent herself and is working with coach Sonja Hlynka at the Sunset Skating Club in Vancouver. "I don't think I was artistically dynamic enough as a skater. I just wanted to make myself a better skater artistically. It is difficult. I used to be just a good jumper. I'm trying to be a well-rounded skater."

Patrick Chan wins 2009 Canadian Figure Skating Championships

Patrick Chan just won the 2009 Canadian Figure Skating Championships in Saskatoon with a pretty astounding lead. Patrick was leading after the short with 88.89 points and received 165.93 points for his free skate, for a total of 254.82 points. His closest competitor was over 48 points behind him. Patrick is now back-to-back two-time nationals champion and what a thrilling moment for him! Vaughn Chipeur won the silver with a total of 206.30 points, Jeremy Ten won the bronze with 204.03 total points and Kevin Reynolds came in fourth with 201.97 total points. After the event, Skate Canada announced that Patrick, Vaughn and Jeremy will be headed to the 2009 Four Continents Championships in Vancouver in two weeks and then the 2009 World Championships in Los Angeles in March.
