Ice Theatre of New York 25th Gala Celebration (video)

On October 25, 2010, Ice Theatre of New York celebrated their 25th year as the nation's premiere ice dance company. Ice Theatre combines ice skating, dance and theatre to redefine what "ice skating" is. For their silver anniversary, founder Moira North pulled out all the stops -- Dorothy Hamill was the honoree, featured guests included Johnny Weir and Sarah Hughes, and the evening was packed with classic as well as avant-garde pieces performed by the Ice Theatre ensemble. Dorothy Hamill, 1976 Olympic figure skating gold medalist, was honored at last October Ice Theatre of New York's annual gala. We published an interview with Dorothy earlier. Fashion mogul Vera Wang was on hand to honor Dorothy Hamill at Ice Theatre of New York's 2010 gala. Vera explains the importance of having an Ice Theatre of New York and why Hamill is the honoree for 2010. The event also featured Johnny Weir and Sarah Hughes (watch complete coverage here).

Here's my interview with skating icon Dorothy Hamill at Ice Theatre of New York's annual gala on October 25, 2010. Dorothy was the honoree this year and she was joined by Johnny Weir, Sarah Hughes, Vera Wang, Dick Button, Peter Carruthers and many more skating luminaries. The event was held in NYC at Sky Rink in Chelsea Piers and the highlight of the evening for me was when Dorothy came out to skate in an ensemble piece to Moon River with pairs great JoJo Starbuck, Elin Gardiner Schran (daughter of Olympic champion Tenley Albright) and long time collaborators Tim Murphy and Nathan Birch. Ice Theatre of New York (ITNY) combines ice skating and dance to showcase skating as performance art. Founded in 1984 by Moira North, ITNY strives to promote skating as more than just spins and jumps -- they create works that integrate contemporary dance, music and art.
