2009 European Championships: Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski win ice dance title

Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski are the 2009 European champions in ice dance. So far, no real surprises at the 2009 European Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki. (Yesterday, Brian Joubert from France won the men's title. The day prior, Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy from Germany won their third European pairs title.) With the withdrawal of 2008 European ice dance champions Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, Jana and Sergei were favorites to win the event. Italy's Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali won the silver, and Great Britain's Sinead Kerr and John Kerr won the bronze. The European Championships conclude tomorrow with the ladies free skate.

2009 European Championships: Laura Lepisto leads after ladies short program

The ladies are taking center stage now at the 2009 European Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki, Finland. After the short program, it's Laura Lepisto from Finland with 56.62 points, followed closely by compatriot Susanna Poykio with 56.06 points. Italy's Carolina Kostner, who won the event the last two years, is in third with 51.36 points.

2009 European Championships: Brian Joubert wins men's event

Brian Joubert, two-time European champion from France, won the 2009 ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Helsinki, Finland. Samuel Contesti representing Italy (I'm reading that he's really French but is representing Italy) won the silver, and Kevin van der Perren from Belgium won the bronze. And look at France's Yannick Ponsero, who won the free skate and pulled himself up to fourth place overall. Reigning European champion Tomas Verner from the Czech Republic fell to sixth place.

2009 European Championships: Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski lead after original dance

The 2009 European Figure Skating Championships continue in Helsinki, Finland with ice dancing. Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitski from Russia just won the original dance segment of ice dance and they are in the lead with 99.60 points going into the free dance. Sitting in second place are Federica Faiella and Massimo Scali of Italy with 95.06 points. And in third are Sinead Kerr and John Kerr from Great Britain with 92.60 points. Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin from Russia withdrew due to injury and they were fifth after the compulsory dance.

2009 European Championships: Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy win pairs event

Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy from Germany won their third straight European pair title at the 2009 ISU European Figure Skating Championships. The current world champions were second after the short program and racked up 132.43 points in their free skate to clinch the title. The duo won the gold with a total of 199.07 points. Yuko Kawaguchi and Alexander Smirnov from Russia won the silver with a total of 182.77 points. Maria Mukhortova and Maxim Trankov from Russia won the bronze with a total of 182.07 points.
